I had my last doctor's appointment at 39 weeks and 3 days. (Greg and I were excited about a doctor's appointment at 39 weeks; however, that appointment had to be cancelled due to doctor's emergency. We were going to ask them to strip my membranes on that day, Friday.) Monday, August 4, was my last doctor's appointment and I was 3 cm dilated and 75% effaced. The doctor said that he expected for me to go into labor within 48 hours, similar to Emma. Monday night, contractions started around bedtime (10 pm). They were very light/non painful but consistently every 5 - 7 minutes. Needless to say, I did not sleep well. I didn't tell Greg about these contractions.
2AM: I woke Greg up, saying it was time to call his Mom to come watch Emma. Greg groaned and wondered why this always happened in the early morning hours. Contractions were more painful but not screaming pain and consistently 5 minutes apart.
3:30AM: We arrived at the hospital. In the triage room, I was checked at 5cm dilated and 75% effaced. I ordered my epidural; however, I had to have 2 bags of antibiotics for the Group B strep and 1 bag of fluids for the epidural before the drugs could be administered. Contractions were still consistent and painful enough to breathe through.
7AM: Epidural administered. It felt wonderful, except for the numbing shot. I loved the quick rush of cold liquid running down/inside my legs. Contractions slowed down and I was slowly effacing and dilating. to 10 and 100%. The doctor expected me to have the baby before lunch.
9AM: Contractions are more painful and I am feeling tremendous pressure down in the birth canal area. The doctor had to go to the other hospital for a procedure and we had to wait on her to break my water. It was painful and I was ready to have this baby!
10AM: The doctor arrived and said that she expected me to push for about 20 minutes. Haha, yea right, I was thinking. She broke my water and told me exactly what to do & how to push. Right before the doctor got to my room, I had this urge to push. Never ending/blinding pressure pain was intense!
10:15AM: It's go time. I pushed through about 2 contractions (8 1/2 minutes) and Sadie was born. The pressure was SO bad and painful but luckily I had Greg to help me through it. Right after the birth, I still felt tremendous pressure but it tapered off.
Sadie was born at 10:22 AM, weighing 7 lbs 5.5 oz and measuring 19 inches long.
Sadie enjoyed kangaroo care immediately after birth and nursed for an hour.
